        My Dear Sir —

                            I fear you have forgotten me — or it is not improbable that you have sent a note to the Office which has not come to hand.  Lest this may have been the case I thought it best to write.

                            The MS. will make, as near as may be, 18 pp.

[This letter is not given in Ostrom, nor is it noted on his revised checklist of 1981. It was in the collection of Alfred Bovet in 1887. It was sold at an auction in Paris about May of 1990, by Mr. E. Vrogille. The current location of this letter is unknown.]

["Office Graham's Magazine," Poe's signature, and the name "E. L. Carey" are each underscored by a simple flourish.]

[The identity of the manuscript referred to is "The Pit and the Pendulum," which was printed in The Gift for 1843, published by Carey and Hart towards the end of 1842. By May of 1842, Poe had left his position at Graham's.]
