Mrs. F. Allan (Richmond) to Poe (en route to Boston?) (Two letters). Noted by Whitty (1911), p. xxx; and Phillips, 1:294. [Phillips describes these as freeing “him from all blame in the Allan family disturbing affairs.” Poe apparently kept both letters, at some point giving them to his wife, Virginia. After her death, they supposedly passed to Poe’s cousin, Elizabeth (by then, Mrs. Edmund Smith). Phillips also repeats a story that Poe “wrote his foster-mother when he was in Europe,” which may be dismissed along with the notion that Poe ran off to Europe in 1827.] (New CL item.) |

B. Paine and then Mr. Henderson). All of these papers were apparently burned after the death of Miss Bleakley’s daughter, Annie Paine, following an outbreak of yellow fever in New Orleans. There are no cited or specifically identifiable letters for this period, although Whitty (1911) says “An old printer told me that he carried letters for Poe from Baltimore to Richmond prior to 1835” (p. xxxv). Whitty states that Poe learned through this correspondence that John Allan was ill, and arranged a trip to Richmond about June 1832 in hope of a reconciliation. Whitty further suggests that this correspondence was with Miss Valentine (Frances Allan’s sister) and “the old Allan servants.”Allen repeats part of this story, saying “A printer by the name of Askew is known to have carried letters back and forth for Poe from Richmond” (Allen 1:337, where he gives his source as “information given to the author in Richmond, July, 1925”).
